How to Use the Online Italian Genealogy Archives

Updated on 30 May 2022. Be sure to read Tip 4!

I was in a panic when the Italian genealogy website, Antenati, changed completely on November 15, 2021. But I'm here to help you cope.

First, the bad news:

  • The new site does not allow us to easily save a high-resolution image of a document. But users are smart. Someone figured out an easy solution, and I will share it with you.

Here are 5 tips for using the new Antenati portal.

Tip 1: Use the Site's Improved Search Function

The homepage of the Antenati site has a slightly different URL than before: https://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it. The first thing you'll see is a search form. Click the Italian flag at the top right of the page, if you like, to translate this search form to another language. I always leave it on Italian because it isn't a lot of words.

You can use this search form to quickly get to a particular town. Type the town's name in the first box (Località), click the yellow-highlighted suggestion, and click the Cerca (Search) button.

The Antenati group is always working on indexing vital records so you can search for a person. Instead of the default "Cerca nei registri" (search in the registers), choose "Cerca per nome" (search for a name). Enter a first name, last name, town, and year (click the down-arrow on those last two for more options).

I searched for my grandfather, born in Colle Sannita in 1902. Antenati has indexed the person's name, both their parents' names, and their date of birth, death, or marriage. It's pretty impressive.

You can click the view button for any search result to go to a page of text. Then click what will not appear to be a link, but is. It'll be beneath the word Atti, and when you hover your mouse over the words, for example, "Atto di nascita 10 Ottobre 1902," you can click that link. You'll find yourself on the exact page of the document you wanted.

There are 3 ways to see all the page numbers and get around the register.
There are 3 ways to see all the page numbers and get around the register.

Tip 2: Find a Province, Time Period, and Town

If you prefer the old method of drilling down to your town, you can still do that. In the top menu of the website, click "Esplora gli Archivi" or Find the Archives. I don't find the map helpful, but scroll below it to see the good-old alphabetical list of provinces.

Click your province of choice to go to its landing page. You'll find two buttons:

  • Cerca nei registri (Search the registries) gives you a list of all the registers for the town. You can sort these from oldest to newest, or vice versa. Click the Vedi il registro (View the register) button for any book you want. You'll now be in a register viewer, able to turn the pages of the book.
  • Esplora i fondi (Explore the fonds—not a typo) is closer to the old format. I'll warn you now that you're better off with the first button to search the registries. But if you want to see the old way, click the button to see the three time periods, now displayed in alphabetical, not chronological, order:
    • Stato civile italiano—the latest time period, usually from 1866 on. These are the years after Italy became a unified republic.
    • Stato civile napoleonico—the earliest time period, usually from 1809 through 1815. These are the years when Napoleon was in charge.
    • Stato civile della restaurazione—the middle time period, usually from 1816 through 1865. These are the years after Napoleon, but before Italy became one country.
  • Click a time period, then choose your town. And whaddaya know? You're right back where you were when you clicked Cerca nei registri. That was a waste of time. So maybe the new site helps us get where we want to go faster.

Tip 3: See Thumbnails or Pick a Page to View

At first glance, it seems as if you can only page your way through a register one image at a time. If that's the case, imagine paging through a 100-page book to get to the index pages.

Luckily, there are several other ways to get around. Start by looking at any page of a register. Then:

  • Method 1: Click the icon to the top right of the viewing area that's meant to look like a window. Change your view from Singolo to Galleria.
  • Method 2: Same as above, click the icon at the top right, but this time, click Right. (Why is that in English?) Now you have a scrollable list on the right with all the page numbers. You can click any one of them.
  • Method 3: Click the hamburger menu the 3 stacked horizontal lines). Then click the third icon down that looks like five stacked lines of different lengths. Now you can see a list of all the page numbers. Or you can choose to see them as thumbnails.

Click any page number to go where you want to go.

Tip 4: Saving a Record's URL and High-Res Image

This section is new as of 30 May 2022.

The Antenati site no longer gives us a button to download a high resolution image of the document we want. But here's a solution for you.

Start by going to the page you want within any register book. As you click from page to page, you should notice that the last section of the URL (after the last slash) in the address bar of your web browser changes with each page. Copy that last section and paste it into this template URL that you will keep in a safe place, replacing only the word TARGET:

https://iiif-antenati.san.beniculturali.it/iiif/2/TARGET/full/full/0/default.jpg

For example, I'm looking at a document and the URL ends in 5K6QgbP. If I paste that into my template URL, replacing the word TARGET, I get https://iiif-antenati.san.beniculturali.it/iiif/2/5K6QgbP/full/full/0/default.jpg. If you click that link you'll see the document all by itself. You can click the image to enlarge it. And you can right-click and save that wonderful high-resolution image.

This may seem like a pain, but wow is it easier than the method I was using!

Hang in there, my Italian researchers. The Antenati site was never the easiest in the world anyway. I've heard that some towns now have more recent documents than they did before. Today I learned that my uncle's town is finally online, and I can expand his family tree!

  1. I don't understand. I actually have in my possession the Atto di Nascita for my great-grandmother born in Santa Lucia della Mela and, yet when I search as instructed from this blog, no info is available for the year of her birth 1870.

    1. Carol, how did you get your copy of the certificate? Some of the towns' documents on this site are far from complete. I have my fingers crossed that they will add more documents, as well as more towns.

  2. How many gigabytes are in these downloads? Don't you still have to search through the images and indices once you have completed the download(s)? I don't see how this is any easier than viewing online and downloading selected images. It would be quicker with the files on your hard drive, but a what cost?

    1. If you want to limit your search to a few people, sure, you can gather the documents one at a time. But if you download batches of documents, you can find all the children of your ancestor, and their marriages, and their children, and so on. I bought a 1 terabyte external drive as a backup. I've downloaded 4 full towns. I've barely made a dent in the terabyte.

    3. Hi, Sandra. The Antenati website is notoriously slow and sometimes goes offline for a while (although I haven't seen that happen lately). If you're looking at a small town, you're going to be related to everyone. Going through the images one-by-one online is like a death sentence.

    1. Hi, Phoebe. I went to the site where you can download the app. The page is in Portuguese, but my browser gave me the option to translate it. It says if you're using a Mac and have problems, see the instructions at https://java.com/pt_BR/download/help/mac_java_update.xml. That page tells you how to update Java in the Java Control Panel. I hope that does it for you!

Sadly, I can not figure out how to get this app to work on my MAC. If anyone else has any other ideas, please let me know!

    3. Phoebe -- I had the same problem yesterday. When I created a (Mac) folder for the images to download to, I couldn't remember exactly what time frame I was on, so I made a temporary folder name. After the downloads were complete, I corrected the folder name. When I tried to download the next file, I got the spinning wheel every time I tried -- changed the folder name back to the temp name and then it worked fine. Makes no sense to me, but it worked. Did you make any name or location changes?

  7. Hello DiAnn, thank you for the great information you have shared! You mention trying a catalog search in Family Search for missing years on Antenati. I did try, but the message tells me I have to either sign in as LDS memeber (I did sign onto the website as a member of the site, but am not a member of the mormon church), or obtain records from a family history center. Am I doing something wrong? I see the records listed, but I can't get to them. Thanks for your help.

  9. Do you download three files at once while still directing them to three different folders on your computer? How?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The number of files you're downloading at once is an efficiency setting. Your computer can multi-thread -- that's like multi-tasking. I found 3 at a time to be most efficient for me. But directing the 3 to different folders? I don't know how you can do that.

      Delete
    2. So when you say you download three files at once, you're talking about three images within a folder. I was mistaken -- I thought "folder" when I read "file." So I thought you were downloading three folders of images at one time. I understand now. Thanks!

    1. You're right, unfortunately. Vital records from Varese are not on the Antenati site or FamilySearch. If they plan on digitizing the files, FamilySearch has said they'll be all done by the end of 2019. Your other options are going there yourself or hiring a local researcher.

  23. I'm late to the game, but thanks for this tip. My ancestors are concentrated among 3 small towns (pop. between 500 and 2500 each) in the Val Fontanabuona. There is a very short list of surnames in each town, to the point that marriages between the same surname are commonplace. As you say, if you spread your net wide enough, you find that just about everyone is related.

That said, given the often huge latency (30-60 seconds being common) and awkward navigation of the site, I would think there would be an eager market for either media (e.g. DVD) preloaded with the data, or data downloadable in bulk. Once the prototype media were compiled, physical duplication or online access would cost very little. Even the trivial effort of assembling ZIP files of subtrees would be very helpful.

    1. But there is the option to bulk download. See the description of the program GetLinks in the article above.

I have used this tool to download over 100,000 images from my villages in both Antenati and FamilySearch.

All of sudden I am getting nothing in FS as they are loading very small files and they are corrupt. I'm wondering if you have been experiencing the same thing in FS. I have attached a link below for one of my villages as I now move into the church records. Thought maybe you could try and then stop and see what you get as all the files I now get are either 34.1 or 34.4 kb only.

I am a dedicated reader of your blog and have read every entry. I too have employed many of your tools and strategies over my 20+ years of dedicated 100% Italian genealogy.

    3. Yeah, I'm not sure why they did it that way, Mike. It's more the exception than the rule.

  37. Hello! Cant seem to find births from 1896 or marriages from 1920 in the town of Baselice.

    1. 1896 Baselice births are missing. You can assume the book was destroyed by water damage or something else. The town's marriage records online end in 1860 and pick up again briefly from 1931-1942, but 1938 is missing. I'm hopeful that some day they'll add later births and marriages.

  38. When my father-in-law died in France we sent a copy of his death certificate to the town he was born in (Bompensiere, Caltanisetta, Sicily) at the same time we requested a copy of both his and his fathers birth certificates. A Sicilian cousin in London wrote everything for us followed with a call to the office when there was no reply. When we finally received the copies the agent in Bompensiere asked if we could look up a family member that immigrated to the USA. Not sure he understood the size of this country and the fact that I don't speak Italian much less Sicilian. Either way I had a starting point and your link to the site has helped with so much of my documentation. Wish it would go further back in Bompensiere as I would love to know the name of the GGG father but a trip is on the bucket list as our family is still living there. Thanks again

    1. I see the available Bompensiere vital records begin in 1866. Disappointing! I had an Italian friend who would go to towns and get me records in exchange for my finding U.S. documents for his relatives. I just gave him what's on Ancestry.com and a Google Maps link or two. That's all he wanted.

  40. Your new instructions on how to download an image from Antenati do not seem to be working anymore. The URL does not change as I scroll through images. Do you have any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I figured out that you can not download an image if you go to the image from a name search on Antenati!

    1. Ah, thank you for the follow-up. The key to getting the right bit at the end of the URL is to navigate through the pages. If you go straight to a search result, you'll see which page of the book it is, such as 48 of 203. When that happens, you can click the year at the top of the result page to go to the book itself. Then navigate to the page number to get the URL you need.

    https://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/ark:/12657/an_ua233389/w6yxAp6
-And when i put the IIIF manifest address in the address bar of my web browser i have this :

403 Spiacenti, non hai l'autorizzazione per accedere a questo contenuto.
Sorry, but you don't have permission to access this resource.

How can i do to download a high resolution image ?
    Thanks

    1. Yes, I updated section 5 above when Antenati changed things. You may have to refresh this web page to see the updates. You have to take the last part of your URL, w6yxAp6, and paste it into this URL, replacing the word TARGET with w6yxAp6:

      https://iiif-antenati.san.beniculturali.it/iiif/2/TARGET/full/full/0/default.jpg

      So, your image is here:
      https://iiif-antenati.san.beniculturali.it/iiif/2/w6yxAp6/full/full/0/default.jpg

  43. Thank you!!!! I was able to use your fix to download a birth record.

  44. Wow, your method of downloading images is spot-on. Previous to this, because of the various changes with the site, I was screen-saving as many as four parts of one document and cropping it all together on a Word document. I was getting results of 8 and 9, but now I get 10s in a tenth of the time. It's going to take me a while to redo many of my hundreds of documents, but for me it's priceless. Thanks.

  45. Years ago when I was researching at the CT family history center, I took my camera and a tripod and
photographed each document on the microfiche screen that I wanted. I asked the woman in charge first
and she said it was OK. This was more than 10 years ago.

    1. I took photos of the document projections with my iPhone, but the film and viewer were of terrible quality. I replaced all the photos I took with crisp, clear images from the Antenati website.

  46. The trick you found to download high quality images no longer works. They’ve changed their site organization. The “target” method (https://iiif- antenati.san.beniculturali.it/iiif/2/TARGET/full /full/0/default.jpg) with appropriate substitution generates an error “The URL can’t be shown”

    1. It works. I've done it several times today and yesterday. You have t REPLACE the word TARGET with the bit at the end of the URL, such as wbBRDWd. The URL with the word TARGET is not a working URL. It's a template.

    2. Make sure you've done something like this. Here's the page in a book: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12657/an_ua914004/wXp1jp1
You copy the last bit, wXp1jp1, and paste it into the template, replacing the word TARGET. That gives you this:
      https://iiif-antenati.san.beniculturali.it/iiif/2/wXp1jp1/full/full/0/default.jpg

Does that last URL not work for you?
